50 years ago, Claus J. Riedel proposed a radical new theory: that the taste of a wine was determined as much by the character of that wine as it was by the shape of the glass from which it was tasted. The idea of designing a specific glass for a specific type of wine was unheard of at that time as all wine glasses were made with the same shape. Coming from a family that had been making glass for 9 generations, Riedel tested his theory and introduced the first Riedel wine glasses in 1961, with each glass tailored to enhance specific properties of body, taste, and bouquet.
