Yet another update

Actually the bottom (inside) is Teflon!. Contacted Sunbeam about the taste issue - they said to empty it and boil it dry, then let it cool completely. Do this 3 times then fill it up and boil, then empty. Maybe to 'cure' the Teflon? Seems to have helped a bit, but it worries me that the Teflon will flake off like all frying pans do.

Bad plastic taste

Just to add to my review below after a few months. The plastic taint taste is very noticeable (worse than a fully plastic kettle). Maybe wether you notice it depends on the type of water you use. I have an installed filter so it comes out of the tap very clean. This kettle makes it taste very plasticky. Why? Well the whole base of the kettle is plastic! (which I missed in the first review). It's not really a stainless kettle - it's half plastic/half stainless. The plastic they've used is worse taste wise than standard white kettle plastic (which never bothered me). Do not buy if you are after a quality tasting cuppa.

Quality Kettle

I bought this kettle after my Breville kettle died while still under warranty. I live in a very remote location so it was going to cost more in postage to send it back than it was worth. So I bought this Sunbeam model. I was a little apprehensive because of the review mentioning a bad taint. I never experienced that. It was good from the first pour. It compliments well with some other Cafe Series products I have so I'm pleased with the asthetics. Since buying it a new review has emerged descibing the fill window not being practical and the wieght a little heavy. I agree it is a little heavy, but I feel this adds to the good strong commercial grade feel to the kettle. As for the fill window, I don't agree either. Who uses it when filling? I think it's a guide to see how much water is in the kettle while it is sitting on the bench (Is this not the case with all kettles?), which it does quite adequately. I always look down into the kettle from the top while filling to see how much water is going in. I think most people do. I haven't ever seen taps mounted at eye level in domestic kitchens. Anyhow I'm vey happy with it and I reckon I got a pretty good deal from Kitchenware Direct. I don't have the luxury of being able to go to shops to look around, compare products and negotiate prices. I rely on these reviews and getting the best online price. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Quality build, but a few design flaws.

Pros - Very solid, lasting build and reasonably quiet (certainly not silent - more water makes it quieter). Cons - Plastic inside the whole lid and spout area may be the cause of taint mentioned in another review. The kettle weighs 1.5 kg empty compared to my last 1 kg - quite heavy. Fill window would be better on the side next to the handle (its also a right handed design because of its location) to better see it when filling. If you hold your thumb over the top of the handle it can get 'heated' by the steam when pouring due to the top mounted spout & handle. The handle centre point being so far out from the centre of the kettle means it pulls down on your wrist more than a curved sided kettle. The 'on' light not very visible (not that it matters). Overall, too many design errors to recommend it as a premium kettle. Possibly the Tefal KI11 would be a better choice?

Not so tasty

July 2010. Bought this kettle recently.
Pros: Quiet operation. Full kettle boils in less than 5 minutes.
Cons: Very bad taint in kettle. Boiled & flushes several times, did cleaning procedure with vinegar etc. Many kettles of water later, it still has a slight taint. Not the water, same water in a Gas kettle is fine. Not sure if coming from 'the plastic' or the element.
Summary: Be prepared for several weeks of operation before you can make a decent cup of tea from it.

Great for me.

Bought this kettle two months ago when we had our first child, needing to heat up bottles in the night meant using our old kettle which rumbled and vibrated & woke everybody in the house. This one is actually silent but isn't really slow like the other ones we've seen, it is an excellent idea and not too expensive either. Also good for those early morning coffees without waking the entire house.
