While you might run your knife over a sharpening steel a few times a week to keep its edge, every now and again you're going to need to grind and hone the edge a bit more than that, and this is where a whetstone comes in.

With a whetstone on hand, you're that much closer to real self reliance in terms of maintaining your knives—and you'd be surprised how many people simply plod along with dull blades. The fact is, unless your knives are being taken to a cutler regularly or you already have and use a whetstone, your blades are indeed becoming or already are dull. But things need not stay that way and you're only a few clicks away from your fist whetstone if you don't have one. Most of the whetstones come with sharpening instructions, too, so you'll be an expert in no time.
